One thing about Maxim and I when we travel, we like to immerse ourselves into a place and get down to the nitty gritty of what truly makes it special. We’ll check out the more touristy areas of course but what really gets us excited is finding unique Gems tucked away from the masses. That’s exactly what we found in Tambor Tropical, a lovely property on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica.

    – Tambor Tropical Property –

Tambor Tropical is a Nature lover’s paradise with
wooden cabins wrapped around an oasis of a pool overlooking the ocean. Lush untouched grounds and an entrance to a private beach – a perfect place to catch the sunset and grab fresh ceviche. Scarlet Macaws, howler monkeys, iguanas, coatis all will be your neighbors and share this slice of paradise with you. Staying here was truly serene.

Nicoya Peninsula is one of 5 “blue zones” in the world – areas where on average people live to be over 90 years old! Other areas include Okinawa, Japan; the island of Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; and Sardinia, Italy.

Focus on family, strong social networks, hard work, and a healthy lifestyle alongside a plant-based diet with antioxidant-rich tropical fruits all contribute to longer lifespans. Staying here even for a few days, I fell in love with the area and could clearly see what makes this part of Costa Rica so special.

    – Tambor Tropical Pool –

The heart of Tambor Tropical is a gorgeous pool with an adjacent hot tub. Grab a poolside chaise, get comfortable at one of the tables and grab a fresh coconut from many coconut trees that grow on the property. There is no better way to spend the day (or night) relaxing by the pool.

    – Tambor Tropical Rooms –

Tambor Tropical is an intimate property. Located at the end of a secluded road, it has 7 two-story bungalows on the property for a total of 13 suits. You really cannot go wrong with any of the suits, as the intimate setting allows for all suits to overlook the beach and towering palm trees. Catch a sunrise from your own wrap-around porch and watch gorgeous parrots – we saw Scarlet Macaws – glide through the skies.

All rooms feature polished wood interiors with magnificent raised ceilings and a skylight on an upper level. We would wake up to brilliant light streaming into our room from that skylight. AC, minibar, coffee maker, and a kitchen with a stove top make Tambor Tropical ideal for long-term stays.

    – The Beach  –

If you want to wander away from the property and explore the area, Tambor Tropical has its own private beach access. Exit through the gates at the front of the property, and you are transported to a semi-wild beach. Stroll along the water to a nearby marina or do what locals do, and set up a picnic under the palm trees growing right by the water. There is no wrong way to spend a day at the beach.

And if you are interested in giving back to the community, consider volunteering for Tambor Bay Turtles – a turtle hatchery that Tambor Tropical runs to stop egg poachers and to contribute to the conservation and education efforts of the region. From their website “this last season we protected a total of 88 nests in the hatchery with 8,134 eggs and 7,142 baby turtles released back into the ocean, a 88% of nest success.” An awesome way to give back to the community and to protect these wonderful animals!
